Frequently Asked Questions

Here be some questions that ye may have before purchasin', or when usin' OnSong Console, savvy?

Does Console work on Windows or just Mac?
OnSong Console works on both Windows and Mac, and most likely Linux too. It just requires a modern web browser that supports th' HTML 5 and CSS 3 web standards.
Do I need t' purchase Console for every device I own?
Nay, matey. OnSong Console be purchased either as an in-app purchase, or be included in yer OnSong Premium subscription. These be both available on multiple devices as long as ye be signed in with yer Apple ID or OnSong account.
Me computer be wired t' me network, but me iPad be wireless. Will Console still work?
Aye, Arrr! As long as both devices be on th' same computer network, a wired connection or wireless shouldn't matter. However, some routers set up different networks for each o' these access methods. Ye will want t' consult yer network equipment user manual for more details on mergin' th' networks if there be issues.
Both me devices be on th' same network but I only get a blank screen in me web browser. Why?
OnSong Console works by turnin' yer iPad or iPhone into a mini web server which may not be appreciated by some networks. Please try th' followin' if ye be havin' trouble connectin' t' Console:
  1. Ensure that yer iPad or iPhone be on and OnSong be runnin'. Console requires OnSong t' be runnin' in order t' communicate.
  2. Disable and enable Console from th' Console screen in th' Utilities menu, or restart yer iPad. In some cases, th' web address that be shown may not be correct, especially when switchin' between networks.
  3. Make sure ye be typin' in th' web address correctly. Ye must add th' http:// before th' four-part number called an IP address, and include th' colon with th' port number (5076).
  4. OnSong Console operates on ports 80, 5076 and 5077. Some networks may block traffic on these ports. Log into yer router and be sure t' allow these ports t' be active on th' network. Some corporate networks do not permit other services t' be runnin'. Check with yer IT staff t' see if ye be allowed t' run console in that environment.
  5. If ye be runnin' a firewall on th' computer, temporarily disable it t' make sure that it be not inhibitin' traffic.
  6. Try a different network t' see if that helps resolved th' issue.
Can I use me iPhone or iPad hotspot connection instead o' a WiFi access point t' use Console?
Aye, ye scallywag! Turn on th' hotspot in yer device's Settings screen and use th' WiFi option. Bluetooth or USB will not work. Connect yer computer t' th' hotspot network, and connect yer device if it be not already th' hotspot. Keep in mind that some carrier may charge ye for hotspot connectivity.
Me Console screen be tellin' me t' type in 127.0.0.1:5076 and it doesn't work. Any ideas?
127.0.0.1 be essentially th' iPad or iPhone referrin' t' itself and be caused by th' network IP address not bein' able t' be resolved. Go into th' Console screen and disable and enable th' console again t' see if that refreshes t' a different web address. Ye can also go into th' Share menu » Connect » Servers and use th' IP address found under yer device's name.
Me Console screen be tellin' me t' type in an IP address that starts with 169...* and it doesn't work. Any ideas?
IP addresses in this range be often generated in th' event that proper DHCP (th' assignment o' IP addresses on a network) has failed. Ye may need t' go into yer network settings and renew th' lease t' force th' network t' assign a different IP address, if one be available.
Why be th' "Follow" button disabled in OnSong Console?
Th' follow button in Console requires th' operation o' Web Sockets. This be a special way for two devices t' directly communicate over a network. Th' Follow button be disabled when th' OnSong web socket server cannot be started. This may be caused by too many devices usin' th' socket port on th' network or due t' a network security settin'.
What web browsers does Console work with?
OnSong Console be an HTML 5, web-based application. This means that it works on modern web browsers such as th' latest versions o' Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer. Different browsers have their quirks and we be continuin' t' refine around these. Older versions o' Internet Explorer will definitely have some issues, Blimey!
I'm gettin' just th' openin' screen with th' OnSong logo and it gets stuck. Why?
OnSong Console requires Javascript t' be enabled in order t' communicate with yer device. Make sure that Javascript be enabled in yer web browser's preferences and that no additional security plugins be preventin' Javascript from operatin'.
